Raksha Bandhan |
This story of Rakshabandhna is according to Hindu mythology. Once a king of Rakchas(Devils) named Bali was a great devotee of lord Vishnu. He was the grandson of Prahalad who is also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.
King Bali was a very generous king and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. He conquered the three loks named patal Lok, Prithvi Lok, and swarg Lok (Heaven). All devtas went to lord Vishnu and prayed for his help to get bake swarglok from king Bali.
Lord Vishnu |
Once Bali organized a Yagya for the blessing of lord Vishnu. During this time, Lord Vishnu brought Vamanavatar to test king Bali and asked him to give three steps of land in charity. But he measured the whole earth and sky in two steps. On this King Bali understood that God himself was testing him. For the third step, he got God's foot placed on his head.
Then he pleaded with God that now my everything is gone, Lord, accept my request and stay with me in the underworld(PatalLok). The Lord accepted the request of the devotee and left Baikunth(Home Of Lord Vishnu) and went to Hades.
On the other hand, Goddess Lakshmi got upset without lord Vishnu. Then she made a Leela and came in front of King Bali as a poor woman and tied a rakhi to King Bali as his sister. After that day all people celebrate that day as Raksha Bandhan.
Bali said I have nothing to give to you, on this Goddess Lakshmi came in her original form and said you have Lord Vishnu, I want him, I have come to take him only. On this Bali let Lord Vishnu go with Mother Lakshmi.
While leaving, Lord Vishnu gave a boon to King Bali that he would reside in Hades for four months every year. These four months are known as Chatumas which extend from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthani Ekadashi.
This is how Raksha Bandhan was started. Rakshabandhan is the famous festival of brother-sister relationship, Raksha means protection and Bandhan means bound. On the day of Rakshabandhan, sisters pray to God for the progress and well-being of their brothers.
